Worcester city centre has been awarded Purple Flag accreditation for its dining, entertainment and culture between the hours of 5pm and 5am.
The South Worcestershire Safer Streets Project – a collaboration between partners including Worcester BID, West Mercia Police and Worcester City Council – contributed towards the accreditation process in 2022 and the flag has now been awarded and collected by the partnership.
Led by Worcester BID, the Purple Flag Award also recognises cities for promoting the safety and well-being of visitors and residents.
As part of the project, Worcester BID is delivering Best Bar None accreditation – a scheme supported by the Home Office that assesses licensed venues, ensuring they are meeting their conditions and celebrating their successes where they go above and beyond.
The Safer Streets project has overseen the new installations of CCTV to support enhancements across South Worcestershire and ensuring a feeling of greater safety.
The wider brief has also worked to improve lighting, landscaping and maintenance to improve the look, feel, and visibility for people using entrances on to the canals plus artwork in underpasses around the area. It is hoped that the combination of all of these interventions will address concerns raised by members of the public, increase education and awareness, and will support the community.
T/Chief Insp Fergus Green said: “I am so proud of Worcester and of the work of partners to achieve Purple flag status. Worcester is a fantastic and safe city to visit and enjoy – it really deserves this recognition. I am excited to see how we build on this success and the opportunities we have to continue to make Worcester a safe city.“
