Caroline Abuelo died in 2009, but her friends and colleagues at Unique Salons have continued to honour her memory each year with Caroline’s Day, raising funds for cancer charities.
Over the past decade Caroline’s Day has raised more than £40,000 and is back for its 10th anniversary year with ambitions to be bigger than ever. This year’s charity partner is the Daisy Appeal, which is about saving local lives through early diagnosis of cancer, heart disease and dementia.
Allan Smith, Unique’s director, said: “It’s a wonderful way to remember Caroline each year; she was a fabulous member of our Unique family and she was an amazing individual. Each year we raise money for a great cause and come together to remember one of our dearest friends.
“Caroline was instrumental in the establishment of Unique Salons and she was an inspirational director. We’ve got a very loyal team and many of them share great memories of Caroline. It fabulous to see her legacy passed on to new joiners.”
Claire Levy, Daisy Appeal fundraising director, said: “This is a remarkable story, keeping the memory of Caroline alive with an annual fundraising day. It’s an incredible tribute to her and testimony to the high regard of her colleagues. We are very grateful to Unique Salons for selecting the Daisy Appeal as the beneficiary of Caroline’s Day in its 10th anniversary year.”
This year, Unique Salons is inviting people to attend the Unique Olympics, a fun family day at Blackburn Leisure Centre in Brough on Sunday, August 11.
Unique Salons director Sharon Windle said: “This is a sports day with a twist, which will see salon teams battling it out for gold medals in elite sports such as egg and spoon racing and the three-legged race.
“We’re really excited to say we’ve got special guests from the Tommy Coyle Academy joining us on the day. There’s loads to do, with with a barbecue, juice bikes, keep-fit warm-up, children’s games, face painting, tombola and much more. The fun kicks off at 12pm at the Blackburn Leisure Centre in Brough and we’re really looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to have a great day out with family and raise loads of money for the Daisy Appeal.”
“If anyone can’t make it to the fun day, they can still get involved by visiting one of our salons in Cottingham, Hessle or Beverley and taking part in fundraising activity there, or just visit our JustGiving page.”
