TEDxTeesside to bring global phenomenon to Middlesbrough

03rd Oct

Teesside is once again set to host an inspiring and thought-provoking TEDx event at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

With speakers from across the UK and beyond, the event on October 16 aims to create a space for diverse voices to share powerful ideas and inspire change.

TED, a global platform for “ideas worth spreading”, is watched by millions of people worldwide. TED Talks are viewed at rate of 1.5 million times per day, which means that a new viewing begins, on average, every 17 seconds.

Now TEDxTeessideWomen wants to bring that energy directly to Middlesbrough for a second year, where organisers are building an engaged community around this global brand.

Unlike major cities such as Newcastle, Manchester or London, Teesside often misses out on hosting significant events of this scale. Many people face the added cost of travel or simply cannot attend because these events are too far away.

TEDxTeesside organisers are making it their mission to change that, bringing the authentic TED experience to Teesside, starting with TEDxTeessideWomen and expanding with future TEDx events, including TEDxYouth, and a TEDx Standard event, ensuring the region is not left behind.

The 2024 event will feature eight talks from speakers including freelance journalist and gender quality campaigner, Chloe Laws, poet Ruby Dahl, Millie Gooch, journalist and founder of the Sober Girl Society, and female founder Sharon Sinclair Williams, among others.

Topics range from climate change, intergenerational friendships, self-love and sustainability, to exploring misandry and ageing boldly.

Along with the talks, attendees will experience performances from musicians, poets and even a podcast recording.

Michaela Reaney, organiser of TEDxTeessideWomen, said: “We are building a TEDx community here in Teesside to show that global conversations can start at a local level.

“TED is watched all over the world, and it’s incredibly exciting to bring this event to Teesside once again. We want people to come together, share ideas, and leave inspired to make a change in their own lives and the wider community.”

The event is supported by sponsors from across the region, including this year’s headline sponsor, Climb & Conquer, along with Square One Law, PX Group, Darlington Building Society, Just Williams, Inspired HR, Spearheads, Ideas Junkies and more.

Climb & Conquer’s founder, Shane Parkins, said: “We’re thrilled to support TEDxTeessideWomen for 2024. The event is rooted in empowerment, building connections, and creating opportunities for ideas to thrive – right on our doorstep.

“It aligns perfectly with our mission at Climb and Conquer to inspire growth and transformation and we’re looking forward to hearing from the incredible speakers on the day, as well as meeting like-minded individuals in attendance.”

TEDxTeessideWomen is open to everyone – not just women. Organisers believe that to address the world’s most pressing issues, diverse voices and perspectives are needed, and that global issues cannot be solved in isolation.

People from across the UK are joining this year’s TEDxTeesisideWomen, from Teesside to London, Birmingham to Scotland.

The organisers are committed to making the day accessible to everyone in the community. Free tickets have been distributed to local charities, community groups, schools and colleges.
