Charlotte Johnson joined Consortium Professional Recruitment in 2023 as a recruitment resourcer, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a personal background that made the transition into recruitment a natural fit.
Since starting, Charlotte has developed her own unique style and grown into a vital part of the team, working across various sectors to connect talent with opportunities that align with their career goals.
Tell us a bit about your background before joining Consortium
I initially started out in business administration. After sixth form, I went to university to study sports rehabilitation, but I soon realised it wasn’t the path for me. I shifted to an apprenticeship in business administration and worked with a pre-employment screening company for over three years.
That experience built a strong foundation in business and client relations, and I was fortunate to learn from my dad, who also works in recruitment. Growing up around his career inspired me, so when the opportunity came to join a technical and engineering recruitment agency in Hull, I took it. Since then, I’ve been thrilled with where my career has taken me.
Why did you decide to pursue recruitment as a career?
People have always been at the heart of what I enjoy, and recruitment allows me to connect with people from all backgrounds. My dad encouraged me to explore recruitment, and I haven’t looked back. It’s been fulfilling to help people find their next role and know I’ve had a positive impact.
What qualities do you believe are essential to excel in recruitment?
Resilience and tenacity are key. Recruitment can be a rollercoaster, and not everything goes as planned. You need to stay motivated and remember why you’re here – to help people find opportunities that fit them well. Good communication skills are also crucial because it’s all about building relationships, both with candidates and clients. A supportive team, like the one at Consortium, makes a big difference too.
What are some challenges you’ve encountered and how did you overcome them?
Early on, I learned that candidates might sometimes back out, which can be disappointing. Over time, I have developed a thick skin and focus on maintaining a positive outlook. I also find that sitting with different consultants and learning their unique approaches helps me develop my own style. Having supportive mentors has been invaluable in navigating the ups and downs of recruitment.
Can you share a bit about your aspirations for the future?
I see myself progressing into a 360 recruitment consultant role and potentially specialising in a particular industry down the line. In the short term, I want to keep building my skills, particularly in sales and candidate interviews. I also look forward to adapting to new trends in recruitment, especially with AI. The industry is evolving, and I want to grow alongside it while keeping the “human touch” at the core of what I do.
How do you stay motivated in a fast-paced environment?
My team is incredible – we all support each other, especially on tough days. That shared sense of purpose keeps me going. Having goals and knowing that my work is helping someone find a role that could change their life is very rewarding.
Charlotte Johnson’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, teamwork, and a passion for helping others. With her drive and dedication, Charlotte is certainly a rising star in recruitment.
