‘Help to Grow has taken me out of my comfort zone’

Callum Harvey, technical manager at Agrimin, explains how the Hull University Business School course has helped him see his business from a different perspective

I joined the Help to Grow management programme to help me with my management skills and help my business to grow.

We didn’t have any specific challenges to address as the business is growing faster than we can keep pace with, so we needed to make sure we were clear on our plan going forward. We have benefited from all of the skills and topics in building more business management knowledge. It has made us much more strategic in our approach which will put us in a good position.

It will help us grow the business by allowing us to sit back and be more strategic in how we develop the business, whether it be in finance or person management, and put Agrimin in a stronger position.

The content and the programme have all been really useful, so much so that we’re also considering sending another member of the senior management team on to the course in September.

The course has been really flexible, roughly an afternoon a week, which works well for us around other commitments. It works well as it spaces it out and is mainly online, so very easy to slot in around other things.

The mentoring has been very useful for us and me personally, as I have been paired with someone outside of my industry but that has given me knowledge I didn’t have around supply chains. My mentor is very approachable and has asked a lot of thought-provoking questions about the business and also provided me with a lot of answers. He is a great sounding board.

I would recommend the course to others for numerous reasons but mainly because it makes you think more about the business not just from a day-to-day point of view but look at things from a more strategic point of view and challenge your views. You’ve got to get outside of your comfort zone to be able to grow your business.
