Darwin Group starts on site to deliver eye-catching new school building

11th Jun

Modular construction specialist Darwin Group has started construction on a new learning resource centre and set of classrooms for a Surrey school.

The 805 sq m build for Halliford School in Shepperton is expected to be handed over in just 21 weeks to minimise disruption to the school and its local residents. Darwin Group will use its turnkey service, which covers all stages of design, planning and construction from start to finish.

Darwin Group is made up of a highly skilled in-house team of designers, architects, town planners and construction professionals. This has enabled them to work closely with the selective independent school and its architect to design a modern three-storey build for the students to occupy.

The eye-catching exterior has been designed with numerous windows on each storey, creating a well-lit and spacious learning environment for the students and staff.

Darwin Group will use modern methods of construction for the build within its highly controlled environment at the Shrewsbury-based factory. This will allow for quality control checks of the modules and means that, now works have started on site, waste will be minimised during installation.

Jim Pierce, group director of Darwin Group, said: “Our team strives to deliver best-in-class educational buildings. Halliford School’s new build has a striking design and evidences the high-quality and cost-effective construction that can be achieved using off-site techniques.

“Our team are working incredibly hard to allow this project to be delivered smoothly within the tight timescale of just 21 weeks.”

James Davies, headmaster at Halliford School, said: “As we look to celebrate our centenary year this September, we wanted to take the opportunity to further develop our site to offer our students the very best possible facilities in which to learn. We wanted a building that would offer us a new learning resource centre at the heart of the school site along with some new light and airy classrooms to inspire our students.

“Having looked at many building possibilities, there was no doubt that the solution offered by the Darwin Group was ideal. Working with the team at Darwin Group has been a real pleasure and their approach is refreshing and highly client-focused. The level of detail and planning that they engage with is first class and I can heartily recommend their approach to other schools looking for similar projects.

“The design that we have come up with is very exciting and we are looking forward to being able to move in to our new Woodward Building at the October half-term just 21 weeks from when we started work on site, which is quite remarkable.”
