ACA-designed Scunthorpe community diagnostic centre opens to patients

08th May

A new £20 million community diagnostic centre (CDC) has officially opened in Scunthorpe, aiming to improve access to vital healthcare services for residents across North Lincolnshire.

Designed by Alessandro Caruso Architecture & Interiors Ltd (ACA) for the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, the facility offers a range of diagnostic services including MRI and CT scanning, ultrasound, X-rays and blood testing. It is one of the first dedicated CDCs of its kind in the UK.

The purpose-built centre forms part of wider efforts to redevelop Scunthorpe town centre and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for essential healthcare.

Completed in 2023, the project has already received international recognition, securing a World TAC Design Award for its architectural design. The building features curved lines and landscaped areas intended to create a calm and welcoming environment for patients. Timber cladding, planted terraces and a cantilevered tree feature are part of a design focused on physical and emotional wellbeing.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This new health centre will have a massive impact on residents’ access to critical health services, further improving health and wellbeing for thousands of people. It’s a tremendous achievement for Scunthorpe and a testament to the dedication and vision of the teams involved.”

Alex Caruso, co-director of ACA, said: “It has been an honour to design Scunthorpe’s new community diagnostic centre. From inception to completion, the space embodies the team effort to infuse functionality and compassion. Every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to ensure patients feel comforted and cared for while enabling healthcare professionals to deliver life-changing services efficiently.”

Mark Pearson, construction director at Helix CMS, said: “We worked closely with Alessandro Caruso Architects and our delivery partners using sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions to futureproof this development. Quality goes beyond meeting specifications; it’s about creating spaces that enhance lives and communities, from the materials we use to the craftsmanship we employ.”

The facility is intended to relieve pressure on local hospitals and reduce waiting times, while contributing to the wider regeneration of Scunthorpe. It will provide same-day diagnostics in a community setting, supporting faster diagnoses and treatment for a range of conditions.
