Segal’s Jewellers has been enchanting the hearts of Hull and Grimsby customers for more than a century.
With a rich history spanning antique, contemporary, and pre-owned jewellery, its legacy is one of enduring elegance. From luxurious diamond jewellery, engagement and wedding bands to prestigious timepieces and everyday jewellery, Segal’s has a range of jewellery to cater to every taste.
At Segal’s, they offer buy-ins and part-exchange services for your unwanted items. Beyond this, they offer a spectrum of services ranging from simple repairs to bespoke jewellery designed exclusively for you, providing expert advice in a friendly environment, and priding themselves on good old-fashioned values.
A cherished, family-owned establishment, Segal’s story began in 1919 when Jack Segal began a watch repair business in Hull. Over time, the business expanded to include jewellery – with Jack’s son Maurice buying a couple of rings, reconditioning them, and putting them in the window. They both sold within an hour and there the story began. The business was carried forward by Jack’s son Maurice and his wife Shirley, forging the foundation of the beloved store that stands today.
Mat, Shirley’s son, brought new life into the business with his passion for watches, diamonds and bullion, elevating the shop to unprecedented heights. Under his guidance, the practice of buying used and unwanted jewellery began. In 1997, Jo, Shirley’s daughter, joined the ranks and established a store in Freshney Place, Grimsby, where it continues to thrive.
While Maurice died in 2011, his memory lives on as one of life’s true gentlemen. Shirley Segal remains actively involved in the business to this day, overseeing operations that are now in the capable hands of siblings Jo and Mat. With the contributions of Mat’s wife, Jane, and Jo’s husband, Martin, the Segal’s family collaborate harmoniously, making the business what it is today. The baton of tradition is now being passed to the next generation, marking Segal’s as a fourth-generation family business, giving the family a source of immense pride.
In 2019, Segal’s embarked on a new chapter, relocating to a larger establishment in Hull, just a stone’s throw away from its former shop in Paragon Arcade, which has been transformed into its dedicated Silver Shop. The gleaming new shop, nestled at the intersection of Chariot Street and Carr Lane, preserves the cherished Segal’s essence while adding a touch of extra sparkle. They have taken the jewellery trade to the next level with their new flagship store, focusing heavily on window displays that evolve regularly, captivating passers-by and inviting them to explore an extensive array of jewellery that sparkles with timeless charm.
Segal’s window display showcases most of its stock, but it is inside the store that gives you a customer-centric experience. Stepping through a double security door which safeguards the wellbeing of customers, staff and merchandise, you enter a pristine and contemporary store, ensuring efficient service for all. You will also find two VIP rooms, utilised to serve customers who require the unique experience when purchasing high priced items. However, it has more than one purpose, as it is used when customers require privacy when selling to the business.
The flagship store in Hull saw a huge increase in footfall when it opened in 2019, so when the news came that it was to move premises to accommodate Freshney Place’s new development, it was an easy decision to reflect the design of the Hull store. Although there is a modern and contemporary feel to the new premises, Segal’s still holds the same values and has the same smiley faces that its customers know and love.
Segal’s has long had a loyal, local customer base, both in Hull and Grimsby and even some travelling from further afield. This expansion into larger premises in both locations was not only anticipated but also met with success. In addition to its devoted regulars, Segal’s has succeeded in captivating the hearts of new customers, who are delighted with the store and the extensive range of antique, second-hand and new jewellery.
In addition to its new physical locations, Segal’s has revamped its website to align with its bricks-and-mortar presence. The website showcases the complete jewellery collection, available for in-store purchase at all three locations, with daily updates. Many customers visit the website solely to explore the new in-stock items.
Segal’s places a strong emphasis on user-friendliness and easy navigation on their website. It offers an extensive range of pages for browsing entire collections, or you can effortlessly apply filters to focus on specific preferences.
Moreover, Segal’s website introduces the small yet exceptional team behind the emails, social media and phone interactions, providing customers with a personal glimpse into the individuals they interact with daily. The website’s primary goal is to replicate the beloved in-store experience, displaying images of the exact items available for purchase, while offering next-day delivery and complimentary gift wrapping on all orders – all year round.
At the heart of Segal’s Jewellers is an unwavering commitment to placing customers at the forefront. This principle is seamlessly extended to the Segal family, who, now in their fourth generation of ownership, continue to play a prominent role in both stores. The Segal’s team regards one another as an extended family, with numerous staff members enjoying long-standing careers within the company.
